LONG OUTLINE

Act 1

The seaplane starts its engines and we see Lana being dragged away, she calls out CONAN.

Conan chases after her, leaping toward the plane and incredibly, lands on the wing with a harpoon. He drives the harpoon straight into the steel wing, allowing him to hang on as his hair blows wildly in the wind.

Conan inches toward the cockpit but the pilot, Duke, takes evasive maneuvers, doing a barrel roll.

The woman, Monsley, opens the port window and starts shooting at him, but Lana grabs at the gun, “Don’t hurt him!”

The pilot takes a shot too, but missed. Conan hurls his harpoon into the cockpit.

Conan nearly falls off the plane, but hangs on with his TOES, he’s gripping between his big toe and the next one. But he can’t reach to pull himself up, so he falls off the plane and into the ocean.

Lana begs them to go back for him, but the soldiers presume him dead and wouldn’t go back for him even if he was alive. Lana breaks down in tears.

The seaplane flies off to Industria.

The ocean waves flow as ever, and a beaten down Conan emerges from the ocean onto the shore, barely alive.

A seagull circles Conan, it’s Tekkie – Lana’s bird friend. “Tekkie – I couldn’t save Lana.” Tekkie flies off and Conan suddenly remembers that his Grandpa was hurt in the scuffle.

Conan finds Grandpa laying in bed, very weak.

Grandpa is dying, but Conan tries to save him. Grandpa is on his deathbed, so he sits with him in the end.

“To live, to really live, no human being should do that alone. Life is a thing to share with others. We’re all a part of something much greater than ourselves. Humans are meant to be together.”

Act 2 – The Flashback

Grandpa tells Conan how it was that they came to live on this island – 20 years ago he was in a spaceship that crashlanded on the island. Grandpa was one of the pilots from the opening sequence that plays before each episode.

When they first landed on the island it was a barren rock, the world around them destroyed. The remnants of a city poke out from the ocean, the water level has risen high enough to swallow the land. They ran out of supplies and were waiting to die. “No hope on the horizon.”

There’s a very silly sci-fi noise “bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-boop” when Grandpa goes into the rocket ship, this is the first of a handful of really wonderful retro sci-fi effects in the show.

Grandpa finds a spring of fresh water that the rocket had opened up when it crash-landed. “It felt as though the land itself was speaking to us.”

With their effort, a bit of grass poked through the rock, moving the survivors to tears. Soon, the island turned green. Then the crabs returned to the beach from the ocean. Even the birds returned. They were able to fish. They were able to rebuild. They built something new as a family.

The men wait around a campfire at night, silently. A woman emerges holding a newborn baby – it’s Conan. Conan was like a son to them all.

“You are strong, just like everything that’s grown in the strange new world. You come from the first seeds ever planted on Remnant Island and you are the bloom we always hoped would return. The sea might have swallowed the remains of the world’s five continents, but there are new islands with life and hope. The world has begun to heal after much suffering.”

“This world will need people like you and her to protect it. It’s fragile, and people have a way of taking its gifts for granted.”

Just then, Grandpa convulses in pain. He tells Conan he must leave and set off on a new journey.

“Never lose heart Conan, find friends. You’ll never know when you’ll find the Spring.”

And Grandpa takes his last breath. Conan is beside himself, begging him to come back. The music is dramatic – fade to black.

Analysis

So even though Grandpa was killed by the soldiers of Industria, in a way, he was given the gift of hope in his final years. At the start of the series we heard his diary entry wondering if he and Conan were the only survivors, but there was no way he could ever answer that question on his own. So while the conflict meant the end of him, he could at least give Conan a reason to live, a reason to carry on without him. After all, Grandpa wasn’t going to see much of Conan’s life into adulthood one way or the other.

Act 3 – Burying Grandpa

Conan emerges solemnly from his house, head down. He’s no longer full of wonder and joy, his eyes are shut tight. “No!” He opens his eyes and picks up a big rock only to hurl it down in front of him. Then he picks up a bigger rock and breaks that first rock. He lifts rocks one after the other, each one bigger than the last, each used to destroy the last.

Conan in tears climbs up a hill like a wild dog on all fours toward a gigantic boulder. He goes cross-eyed lifting it overhead to hurl it into the sea. His rage is giving him incredible power, but it brings him no joy.

He’s worn out, beaten down and bloodied by his own rage.

Back to the seaplane, the soldiers spy a ship called The Baracuda.

Now we enter the ship itself in the captain’s quarters – a ridiculous man – Captain Dyce is assailing the chef for serving him a gross looking fish again.

A man named Dongoro speaks to the captain through a pipe that carries his voice from one part of the ship to another.

Monsley lands the plane near the ship and asks to board. They’re connected in some way.

Dongoroth calls out and says “You’re not going to be happy about this, but they found the girl who went overboard.” So he was the one to capture her, and she escaped from the ship. Captain Dyce curses Monsley because she’s going to get the credit for bringing her in. Monsley refuses to hand Lana back over. She mentions the Industria High Committee – a hint at the ruling order of Industria. Lana has said it’s a horrible place – and it seems pretty strict so far.

Dyce is a Defense Ministry Officer, but Monsley shows him no respect. She asserts authority over him, and he has no choice but to blather – “I’m in charge!”

Later that night – they begin to repair the ship and the seagulls flock to Lana. She communicates with them telepathically as the music turns a little freaky – we don’t hear what the birds say (or think?), but Lana says that her grandpa – Dr. Lao – can also talk with birds. She asks them to look out for Conan if they ever go back to Remnant Island. She calls out to Conan and hopes that he’s alright. From what we saw before, he definitely isn’t.

But back on Remnant Island, we see Conan has been hard at work building a grave for Grandpa, a kind of stone monument. He swears that he’ll find Lana and do what Grandpa asked. He’ll fulfill his last wish.

Conan tries to set out to sea by rolling on a metal cylinder like a lumberjack spinning a log down a river.

Now Conan sits on the beach with a fish in mouth, drawing a diagram of a boat with his toes. His other foot scratches his nose. His feet are like hands! He really is like an animal boy. He fashions together a kind of an outrigger, but crashes through the wooden planks. He’s hard at work to get his boat prepared. There’s a beautiful scene with him unfurling his sail – the grass is shimmering. It snaps open. And soon he’s carried downhill by the wind.

Nighttime – Conan is whittling an oar and sees a phantom of Grandpa – not literally a ghost, but where he always sat.

Day breaks and there’s a beautiful sunrise. Conan’s ship sits ready. Conan visits his Grandpa’s grave to say goodbye one last time. He walks down the hill, looks back at the grave and shouts out with all his heart GOODBYE! He sets off, pushing his boat down the grassy hill and flying through the air, crashing onto the ocean. He’s full of joy now, shouting GOODBYE through laughter. He’s invigorated by the world. He also uses his foot to steer the ship.

Fade to Black.
